Your tumble dryer works hard to give you the perfect load every time. However, with regular usage, it can accumulate unpleasant odours which may transfer to your laundry. Thankfully, there are a few simple tricks you can try to deodourise the smell without using harsh chemicals. Follow the steps below and you ll be on your way to fresh and fragrant laundry again.
If your dryer is emitting a burning odour
If your dryer emits a burning smell, it s essential to act immediately as it may be overheating. Ignoring this odour could lead to a hazardous dryer fire. Here s how to inspect your dryer:
- Check the fluff filter: If the dryer takes longer to dry and smells like burning, the fluff filter and trap might be full, restricting airflow and causing overheating. Empty the filter after each cycle and regularly vacuum it.
- Inspect the dryer vent: Even with a clean fluff filter, lint can accumulate in the dryer vent. Disconnect the vent from the wall and dryer, inspect it for clogs, and vacuum out any lint. Check the external vent for blockages.
- Assess the electrical cord: A shorted wire in the dryers electrical cord can cause a burning smell. Turn off the circuit breaker and inspect the cord for black or burnt marks, indicating a short. Replace any damaged cords. Please contact an electrician, if necessary.
If your dryer is emitting a mouldy odour
If your dryer has a mouldy smell, it might be due to wet clothes left in the washer or dryer for too long. Mould can transfer to the dryer drum and the lint from these clothes can smell bad. Remove wet clothes promptly, and clean the filter fluff regularly.
If odours persist, cleaning your dryer might be necessary. Here s how:
- Clean the fluff filter: Remove any lint and vacuum the lint trap housing.
- Use a clean rag to wipe down the dryer drums interior, including the inside of the door.
- Leave the door open for at least 30 minutes until the interior is dry.
