While food types may differ slightly based on region, here are 5 popular Deepavali staples that we love.

1. Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun is a delicacy that is not only fun to look at, but satisfies anyone with a sweet tooth. The soft dough balls, consisting of white wheat flour and milk solids, are lightly fried in a frying pan before dipped into rose-flavoured sugar syrup.

2. Karanji

At first glance, the crescent-shaped, fried Karanji resembles a curry puff. However, the puffs are actually stuffed with a sweet filling made up of fried gram, nuts, dry coconut and powdered sugar. Absolutely delicious as a teatime snack!

3. Kheer

Despite its simplicity, Kheer remains an extremely popular yet tasty festive favourite. The creamy rice pudding is flavoured with cardamom, then topped with chopped almonds and cashews for a satisfying crunch.

4. Murukku

No Deepavali celebration is complete without Murukku. This savoury, crunchy Indian snack is made with dal and butter, before being passed through a spiral mould to achieve its unique structure. The batter is then fried to crispy perfection and enjoyed by the young and old alike.

5. Vadai

This delicious doughy snack is extremely flavourful thanks to a tantalising combination of dal lentil paste, chopped onions, red chillies, and curry leaves. A good vadai is always soft and fluffy on the inside, and boasts a crispy, golden brown exterior.
